Guest Interview with Jerri Drennen

Please give a warm welcome to Jerri Drennen, dear friend, and talented author of twelve romantic suspense novels.Today she’s talking about Watching Whitney, her latest release with Crimson Romance.

What is Watching Whitney about?

It’s about a Denver homicide cop who is on sabbatical at a resort known for its fishing and is reeled straight into a murder and to protecting a single mother who fits the description of the victim found on the murky bottom of the lake.

What inspired you to write this particular story?

Weird but it started out as a peaceful image of a man fishing at a lake, all tranquil and picturesque, then he snags his line and the serenity vanishes.

Describe your writing in three words.

Fast-paced suspense.

Do you have specific techniques you use to develop the plot and stay on track?

Nope. I’m a panster. I allow the characters to take me where they want to go.

Are your characters in the book based on anyone you know?

I have images of what they look like but they aren’t people I know.

Have you ever had difficulty “killing off” a character because she or he was so intriguing and full of possibility for you?

Yes. Keith in Dark Moon Magic. I felt so bad but it had to be done.

If your book was made into a TV series or movie, which actors would you choose to play your main characters?

Simon Baker from The Mentalist since he was who I pictured as Steve in Watching Whitney. I’m not sure about Whitney.

Who gets to read your drafts before they’re published?

My sister, Cindy and my critique group.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve Googled?

Satanic rituals while I was working on Dark Moon Magic.

What projects are you working on now?

I’m working on the third book in my Z-series, Heart’s United.

Is there anything else you would like to say to your readers?

Just this: If you read an authors book, and you really like it, let them know, because it means so much to them.

Where can readers find you and your books online?

Homicide detective Steve Morgan is at Crane Lodge on forced sabbatical. Day one of fishing at the resort’s lake has him casting his line straight into a crime scene, reeling in a dead woman from the murky bottom. Thinking the murderer must be a local, Steve offers the small town police help in the investigation. What he doesn’t count on is the gorgeous housekeeper at the lodge resembling the victim in the lake and her survival becoming more important than finding the killer.

Whitney McAllister is raising her daughter on her own, working long, grueling hours at the local resort cleaning guest cabins. The detective investigating a local murder may be just doing his job, but after their run-in, she intends to steer clear of him. Until someone breaks into her house and she’s forced, for her daughter’s sake, to seek Steve’s protection. Her attraction is overpowering, yet she knows once the murder is solved, he’ll be gone.

When a string of similar unsolved murders is unearthed, tension mounts. Steve knows he has to find this serial killer fast, before he loses the only woman he’s ever loved.

Whitney dropped the phone and ran down the hall to Kylie’s room. Taking care not to wake her, she scooped her into her arms and left the small bedroom. In the utility closet there was a secret room that she’d happened across four months into moving into the home. It’d be the best place for her to hide until Harold came.

Whitney opened the closet and ducked inside, releasing a hook from above to get into the room. The crawlspace was where she planned to hide Kylie’s Christmas and birthday presents to prevent her daughter from finding them.

Inside the small room, she closed the door and slid down, her back propped against a beam just in case the intruder found them. It would help keep him from getting in if she stretched her legs to the wall on the other side.

Whitney’s skin crawled when she remembered the last time she was in the room. Cobwebs filled the walls and floor and where there were webs, there were spiders. She hated them—always had. Thank God Kylie was sleeping. She’d be screaming bloody murder.

Breaking glass sent her heart into arrest. The intruder was going to get into the house.
What was he after? She didn’t have anything a robber would want—nothing worth risking prison time for. So why break into her house?

Shuffling near the utility door had her blood running cold and pumping hard throughout her body. He was going to find them if Harold didn’t get here soon.

The creaking of the door brought a scream to her throat, but she held it in. On the other side of the secret room she heard deep, shallow breathing.

She and Kylie were going to die if she didn’t do something. A thump against her back stopped her heart.

Jerri Drennen was raised on a farm in a small town in Minnesota. She met her husband and moved to Southeast Missouri where they live today with 3 of their 4 children, her granddaughter, and an array of furbabies.
