Description:

“Mom died in her sleep last night.” Those are terrifying words for a child to wake up to. The beetle that falls off the stretcher and stares at her is only the beginning one of the strangest and most frightening times in Lori’s life. Death is not a pretty thing, especially not when the funeral is to be at the Lights Out Chapel and Crematorium.

Once she walks into the funeral parlor, she experiences things that no little girl should ever have to experience. No one is acting normal. No one can see what is going on. Is Lori the only one who sees the blood oozing from the pictures of Jesus on the cross? Doesn’t anyone else see the beetles? Is Lori hallucinating when she sees her mom sit up and hears her speak? There is absolutely nothing soft and tender about what happens to Lori.

From her overly morbid piano teacher to the creepy preacher and a father that just isn’t acting like himself, Lori is surrounded by people and things that hint of something bizarre. Once she leaves the Lights Out Chapel and Crematorium, things will go back to normal. Or will they?

Excerpt 1:

Lori, it’s your turn to say bye now. You need to tell her that you love her and how much you will miss her.” Daddy put me down next to her coffin and placed his hands on my shoulders. He pushed me so close to her death box that I felt the white satin that overlapped to the outside. It rubbed against my hands. At least it was soft for Mommy. She would be comfortable in there.

I decided to speak out loud this time. Maybe no one else would bring me back up here again if I spoke my goodbyes out loud. “Mommy,” I began, but then I started crying so hard I couldn’t speak. Daddy rubbed my shoulders until I quieted down and could begin again. “Mommy, I love you. I don’t want you to leave me. Please come back. No one, not even this Jesus, is worth leaving me over.” I opened my eyes and looked at her. She hadn’t moved since Mrs. Minuet had dragged me up here. But then her eyes opened, and she stared at me. She was staring at me! I sucked my breath in and felt my legs grow weak as my head began to spin. With one hand I grabbed on to the edge of the coffin, while with the other hand I grabbed hold of Daddy’s arm.

Daddy! Daddy! Mommy’s not dead! She looked at me!” I screamed as I jumped up and down. “She was still alive when they took her out of the house. I saw her trying to get out from under the sheet.” I pulled on his arm and shook it. “Please, Daddy. You’ve got to save her.”

Daddy was beginning to sound a bit mad. He picked me up and held me over top of Mommy. “Maybe if you give her a goodbye kiss you’ll understand she’s dead, and believe me when I tell you she isn’t coming back.” I was so close to Mommy’s cheek that I could see the makeup was beginning to cake in her pores. There was no warmth rising up from her body, only icy coldness.

What is your book about?

The Blood Chronicles is about, Jesse Banks, her family, and their endless battle to survey while being hunted by the apex evil…the vampire. We soon discover the importance of Jesse’s family and why they are pursued. As the family grows the danger escalates and soon the characters are walking a tightrope between life and death, right and wrong but they must if they are to have any chance of destroying this creature of the night.

What inspired you to write this particular story?

I am a fan of vampires, first and foremost, and I liked the idea of taking on the challenges presented by writing a vampire novel. Let’s be honest, just about every stone has been turned over when it comes to writing stories about vampires. I wanted to write a vampire story that was original yet held true to some of the things we have come to know and love about this creature of the night. I also wanted the story to entertain and engage the reader. I believe I was successful but, ultimately, that will be decided by the reader. I found it surprising that the story grew to a trilogy…it was meant to be a single story.

Describe your writing in three words.

Engaging, Driven, Intense

Do you have specific techniques you use to develop the plot and stay on track?

I brainstorm a great deal before I write. I mean, I brainstorm in detail about the story idea and make notes about everything. I don’t use all of my notes but they help to inspire me to look at it from different angles. When I’m deep into my writing I will make notes at the point where I am stopping. These notes include key points that happened, how they impact what will happen, what plot points I need to tie up and any details I need to continue to build on regarding the characters. This really helps me to stay on track.

Are your characters in the book based on anyone you know?

I’ve always liked this question. Each character, both good and bad, has a piece of my personality added to them. Some of the characters display characteristics of people I have known but none are based on one singular person.

Have you ever had difficulty “killing off” a character because she or he was so intriguing and full of possibility for you?

No, I’ve had trouble making the killing scene stand out. I mean, there are some characters that propel the story with their killing off. In those situations I want them to go out with a bang rather than a whimper. In the end, it’s all about the story. If a character’s death gives the story that punch or that jolt I’m looking for then it’s going to happen. I feel like I owe it to that character to make it a scene that is remembered though.

If your book was made into a TV series or movie, which actors would you choose to play your main characters?

Oh I have spent time thinking about this one. Drago – Christian Bale, Sam – Ryan Kwanten, and Reba – Emma Stone

Who gets to read your drafts before they’re published?

My wife reads all of my works before they are sent to beta readers or the publisher. She happens to be my harshest critic too.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve Googled?

Do you really want to know? Okay, just remember…you asked for it. The weirdest thing would be different torture techniques from other countries. That generated an interesting list of search results. Of course, this was done for book research….just thought I would clarify things a little.

What projects are you working on now?

At the moment I am editing my third novel, Demathia Rising, which releases in March 2013 and I am writing the third novel in The Blood Chronicles.

Is there anything else you would like to say to your readers?

You will never truly know how honored I am that you decided to read my novels. I greatly appreciate that and I hope you will also read my future stories. I have so much to share with you. It is going to be a fantastic rise. Thank you.

The birth of a child is a time for joy and celebration. For Sam and Reba, it is a time for concern and worry. Concern for what could be and worry for what lurks in the shadows. They both know Reba’s baby, Christian, is special. But Drago waits in the darkness, and he, also, knows how special the child is. He knows what the child’s birth means. Now Drago stalks them, waiting for his moment to strike and claim Christian for his own evil purposes. As he unleashes his sinister plan, Sam and Reba fight to survive and keep their newborn out of his clutches.

Chased by a group of would-be vampires manipulated by Drago, Sam and Reba are forced to abandon their home and find sanctuary in once forgotten locations. But they are not alone in this fight as family and friends arrive. Will it be enough?

Life will be lost, blood will be spilled, painful memories, and emotions will torment minds…all part of Drago’s revenge.

Sam rushed out the door and followed the baby. He stood at the window to the nursery and stared at the babe. Christian’s little body was wrapped in a warm blanket. His little lips pursed as he slept. Sam’s eyes refused to blink while he followed each of his boy’s slightest movements. A body brushed against his shoulder.

“That’s a good looking kid you got there, friend.”

Sam jerked back and turned. A hospital janitor leaned against his broom handle next to him. Sam smiled. “Thanks, he’s really something special.”

The janitor nodded his head and chuckled.

“I know full well how special that one is. Yep, he’s special, all right.”

Sam squared his shoulders in front of the janitor; his eyes narrowed. “What do you mean by that?”

“Come on, Sam, did you honestly think certain people wouldn’t know about this day? You know that kid belongs to us—to him, that is.”

The janitor grinned. Sam stumbled backward at the sight of the elongated canines protruding from his top lip. Oh shit, not here, not now. A chill ran up his spine. Panic wrapped around his body in a paralyzing grip. “This can’t be. Not again. All of that is over now.”

The janitor shook his head.

“No, Sammy boy. It’s just beginning. There are more of us than you know, and that child is going back where he belongs.

Now, be a good boy and stay out of the way. You can’t stop this.”

Sam looked over his shoulder at the sleeping baby and then at the janitor and his sinister sneer.

“Over my dead body.”

The janitor shrugged his shoulders.

“If that’s what it takes.”

The janitor swung his fist at Sam’s head. Sam dodged the punch; his foot flew out and connected with the side of the janitor’s knee. The janitor lost his balance. Sam snatched the broom out of his hands as he fell to the floor. He twirled the broom stick in his hands and crashed the end of it against the janitor’s face. Sam knelt down beside the janitor and grabbed him by the shirt.

“I don’t care who you are, or who you think you are, or even who you work for. No one is going to touch my child as long as I’m breathing. Now, you run off and tell your friends to forget about my family. If you don’t, I’ll kill each and every one of you.”

The janitor laughed.

“Your son is not yours, and you have no idea what I am. We will get him. You can count on that.”

Sam stood.

“I’ve got a pretty good idea… But have it your way.”

He drove the blunt end of the broomstick against the janitor’s mouth. The janitor coughed and gagged as he spit blood and teeth on the floor.

“You prick, you broke my teeth.”

A door slammed; Sam turned.

The janitor pushed off the floor and stumbled down the hall. Sam started after him, but looked at a small white object in the pool of blood at his feet. He bent down and picked up an elongated canine. This is a fake tooth. He looked up in time to see the janitor duck into the stairwell. Who gets vampire teeth implants? What a freak. A tiny cry tugged at his ears, he turned, and his eyes drifted back to Christian. This could all end with you.

Tears stung his eyes, and he banged his head against the Plexiglas. That was so wrong of me. No, he is my son, and I will find a way. He pushed off the window and sprinted back toward Reba’s room.
