Journal Entry – November

 It’s been weeks since the new Ice Age began, the landscape a sea of snow and ice as far as I can see. The bleak ruby skies haven’t changed since that day at Yale University when my father’s climate change experiment turned the world upside-down, destroying and covering everything with ice.

Not many made it.

Four thousand survivors are at Liberty, the biodome settlement in Rhode Island, plus the two deadly groups of nomads known as Bleeders and Sproggs, who have made their homes in caves and igloos. There could be other dangerous scavengers out there.

They just haven’t found us yet.

I don’t know if others have survived elsewhere or how many people have died around the world due to the cataclysmic shift in the climate no one expected. I can only guess most of the world’s population is gone including all animal life. Mass extinction. We have no real way of knowing for sure, unable to communicate to find out.

More than anything, I miss my father and my brother, Luke. My younger sister, Chloe, and Brandon Church, the man I’ve always loved, are the only comforting pieces left from a life long gone, reminding me there is still hope.

Life inside the domes isn’t easy. Overworked survivors are getting fed up with the food rations. The Infinity Council fears riots will break out if they can’t find a solution. We can’t keep up with the biofuel production—special fuel made from sunflower and other nuts, desperately needed for our outside vehicles to scavenge for supplies, extra food, and medicine frozen deep within the ice.

I want to believe what’s left of human life will survive in this new world, but with each day, we face new challenges in and outside of Liberty.

It isn’t going to matter if some of us have mysteriously developed a rare blood type known as Golden Blood and with it, strange paranormal superpowers. Those things won’t matter if what’s left of humanity ends up killing each other over food rations or starving to death.

The baby was coming. Here. Now.
In this ancient, godless wood with the devil chasing her.
She staggered up the bank seeking refuge. She doubled over and fell to her knees. There. A curved bush with a den inside. She crawled on pine needles to her sanctuary, scratching her knees and stomach.
She fell on her side and curled up in pain. Daggers ripped through her.
Breathe. Breathe.
Charlie had come so fast. This one would, too. The pain subsided and she rolled onto her back, praying the killer stayed afar. Moonlight stabbed through the branches, exposing her. She pulled herself further into her wooded cave. A lone owl hooted above, announcing her hideaway. Laura darted her eyes back and forth from tree to tree, but the woods remained empty.
Pain grabbed her harder, tightened across her belly like a giant fist pounding into her. She scrambled in the dirt for a twig, in between gasps and grunts. She bit down hard on a stick, swallowing sour grit. Pressure pushed all around. And such pain. She held her legs up, from underneath, widening the way for her child. She felt his head between her legs, pulsing to get out. Not here. Not now. Oh God, help me.
Then a laugh cut across her hell.

Barrick watched Lyza as she sauntered out of the canteen back toward the infirmary. He could tell she was tired by the heaviness in the swing of her hips. She turned briefly, glancing back at him to blow him a kiss. Barrick traced every curve of her body in one swift glance. Her baby bump was noticeably larger than the day he’d met her. It also turned him on a hell of a lot more than it had back then. Barrick smirked crookedly.
“I’m a dirty, dirty man,” he said out loud. He stood statuesque for quite some time, playing with mental images of Lyza’s pregnant, glistening body draped across his own like one of his lopsided fur blankets. He loved the way she wiggled and squirmed in the throes of passion, how she made little rodent sounds when she yearned to feel every inch of him.
