#WROTM: Breathless (Death Viewers, Book 1) by Christine M. Butler

BreathlessTitle: Breathless (Death Viewers, Book 1)
Author: Christine M. Butler
Supporting Authors Tours

My name is Lacy McAdams and I am a Death Viewer, an agent of the highly trained Homicide Viewing Squad, otherwise known as the Death Squad. When a person dies suspiciously, I get called in to view their death. Actually, I get to rewind their memories up to 12 hours before their death.

You’d think that would make solving murders a no-brainer, but there’s a catch. When people are about to be murdered, they get that whole “life flashing before their eyes” thing going on, and suddenly what really happened is mixed with what they remember from their twelfth birthday party.

In other words, a dying person’s mind is a jumble of reality vs memory. It takes training, experience, and a lot of trial and error to get things right. I’ve been at it for quite a few years, learned a lot, and I have a natural talent for filtering out the realities from the memories.

It’s a good thing, because the most important case of my life just landed in my lap while I was at dinner with Brad. It was our third date and judging by how fast he took off, not to mention leaving me with the bill, I’d say he wasn’t too thrilled to be dating a Death Viewer. Maybe I should have mentioned that on the first date?

Chances were good that I would never see Brad again, but the case that I got called in for was one that could make or break Homicide Viewing Squads nationwide. No pressure or anything…

RETRIBUTION (A Whitney Steel Novel) and Tips on Writing a Sequel #IAN1 #series

“A sequel is the chance to test your characters and develop them further.”

series

Right now I’m writing my first sequel. RETRIBUTION is the sequel to REFLECTION, my debut romantic suspense and most people are surprised to learn the series was planned from the time I wrote the first paragraph of REFLECTION.  So here are a few of my tips for writing a sequel…

Tip #1:  Keep the story moving forward in a way that will allow readers to follow where you left off  with the first book. Of course you don’t need to pick up exactly from the last sentence but you do need the story to flow seamlessly in conjunction with the story before.

Tip #2 :  If you plan on using all the same characters in your sequel, including minor ones, find what works for you whether you use an notebook to detail things like eye and hair color, traits and background history or use software like Scrivener (which I love!). As characters grow and become more experienced, they can change and those changes need to follow forward into book three and so on.

Tip#3:  When plotting the sequel take your time and make it interesting and complex. Make sure the plot isn’t predictable otherwise readers will lose interest.

Tip #4:  Remember characters need to grow and change by the end of the book. It doesn’t have to be a huge change to make your characters appear more human-like and not cookie-cutter-card-board characters.

Tip #5:  Happy Writing!

retributionWEBCopyPre-order RETRIBUTION – Book Two in The Whitney Steel Series at Amazon for $2.99 and save! (Reg. $4.99)

“Another action-packed thrill-ride! Whitney Steel and Blake Barnett have already been through hell and back with Nathan Shaw and Pablo Sanchez in REFLECTION. Now it’s time for a wedding and the adoption of Angel, the beautiful child cloned from Blake’s sister before her death. But revenge never waits for happily-ever-after. RETRIBUTION is a wild and terrifying ride that never quits! Cresswell has written her next bestseller!” –Patricia, Room with Books

THE WAR HAS JUST BEGUN…

Once the top leader of the Sur del Calle cartel, Colombia’s largest drug trafficking organization, Pablo Sanchez has declared revenge against Blake Barnett, the FBI agent who’d killed his twin brother over a decade ago.

After one failed attempt forced him to flee the United States, Pablo has a bold new plan and he’s even more determined to kill Blake and his fiancée, Whitney Steel.

From Las Vegas to the militant infected jungles of Bogota, Blake has no choice but to risk his life and infiltrate the cartel’s inner world and eliminate the ruthless drug lord.

But the price of failure is higher than ever as he’s forced to use the woman he loves as a pawn in a deadly game—where the events of the past and present collide.

Serial Killer Quarterly “Body Harvest: Prolific American Killers” #truecrime #ebooks

Cuddle up with a nice piping mug of hot chocolate, because after reading “Body Harvest” there isn’t a blanket in the world that will stop you from getting the chills.

SKQ_Vol1_ChristmasIssue_Cover-1800x2700

With nearly 200 victims between them, the seven compulsive killers in Serial Killer Quarterly’s special Christmas 2014 issue, “Body Harvest: Prolific American Serial Killers”, not only destroyed countless lives and families, but Thanksgivings, Christmases, and New Year’s. Author and criminologist Judith A. Yates attributes a minimum of 20 victims to America’s first serial killers, Micajah & Wiley Harpe, who rather than bringing “peace on earth and good will to all men,” sought to exterminate the entire human race. Similarly, whenever Ted Bundy went “walking in a winter wonderland” it was in the snowy mountains of Washington or Colorado – landscapes strewn with the ravaged corpses of his 30+ female victims.

Kevin M. Sullivan – author, Bundy researcher, and retired preacher – looks at arguably the most infamous serial slayer in American history, and his victims – known and potential.

In her true crime debut, forensic psychologist Joan Swart goes above and beyond to tell us the tale of America’s most prolific homosexual sadist. With possibly a higher body count than Bundy and the Harpes combined, Randy Kraft may have actually rung in the New Year by torturing, killing, and mutilating several of the over 60 young men whose lives he appears to have extinguished.

Lee Mellor, author, criminologist, and SKQ editor-in-chief, writes of the 22 strangulation-slayings and post-mortem rapes perpetrated across the USA and in Canada by “Gorilla Murderer” Earle Leonard Nelson during the mid-1920s, as well as 10+ cold-blooded murders linked to “Coin-Shop Killer” Charles T. Sinclair throughout the Eighties. Spokane prostitute killer Robert Lee Yates – another necrophile – has admitted to shooting 16 victims and defiling their bodies, but author and journalist Karen D. Scioscia asks: were there more? Are you full of holiday cheer yet? Well, at least we know that Christmas was truly a time for family in the Bender household – even if their feasts were purchased with the money they stole from the people rotting under their floorboards.

Dane Ladwig looks at the more than 20 hammer murders believed to have been committed by The Bloody Benders in the mid-nineteenth century.

#SerialKiller Quarterly “Cruel Britannia” Fred and Rosemary West “Garden of Bones” @kimcresswell

Serial Killer Quarterly’s “Cruel Britannia” finishes off 2014 with a four-feature British bloodlust frenzy! Come take a trip with me into the dark heart of the British Isles, from the gritty northern industrial cities of Leeds, Bradford and Manchester to cosmopolitan London to the verdant countryside of Herefordshire!

SKQ_Vol1No4_Cover-1800x2700

Dr. Katherine Ramsland wades through the heavy fog surrounding the “Moors Murders”: a series of high-profile child killings committed in the Swinging Sixties by Scottish sadist Ian Brady and Myra Hindley, his English girlfriend and accomplice. To this day, they continue to be the most shocking and headline grabbing crimes in modern Britain! With Katherine’s background in psychology and philosophy, there is surely no one better suited to explore Brady’s “existentialist exercises” in murder, his psychopathic pedophilia, and folie-a-deux relationship with Hindley.

Where the “Moors Murders” remain Britain’s most notorious series of murders, the atrocities committed by Fred and Rosemary West are undoubtedly the most depraved. Kim Cresswell churns the stomach with her unbelievable account of incest, bestiality, rape, torture, murder, necrophilia and filicide, culminating in a “Garden of Bones” in Gloucester.

Carol Anne Davis looks at one of the greatest abuses of police power in English history: the entrapment of Colin Stagg for the 1992 ripper-style murder of blonde beauty Rachel Nickell on Wimbledon Common. Meanwhile, the real killer, Robert Napper, was already confined to Broadmoor asylum for the 1993 evisceration murder of Samantha Bisset and the rape and deadly suffocation of her infant daughter.

Edgar-Award winning author Burl Barer makes his Serial Killer Quarterly debut, lending his highly original voice to an intriguing re-examination of the murders ascribed to “Yorkshire Ripper” Peter Sutcliffe, and the phenomenon of homicidal fame.

Robert J. Hoshowsky, Aaron Elliott, and Kim Cresswell also look at three comparably notorious historical London slayers in their pieces on creepy old John Christie, “Acid Bath Vampire” John George Haigh, and Jack the Ripper suspect and bride poisoner George Chapman.

Warning: this issue contains an abundance of mutilation, necrophilia, and tea.

Praise for the Book

What fun, and new perspective on vampires. And the intro of new specie, Enchantress, gives this novel a wonderful and imaginative take.

It gives us another take on Vampires and the only Enchantress left in the world. The story flows smoothly and the characters are developed well.

Let me just start by saying for the record I am not a huge fan of Vampires or flying humans, but this book has led me away from that concept with a fantastic storyline that focused on a man and woman who were meant to be. The fighting scenes were very detailed and visual as you can tell the authors made this a point of emphasis in preparing this book.

Excerpt

The sun was just starting to rise, and I knew that her disturbing dream would not lead to sleeping late. I could hear her heart beating faster as she began to wake up. Wrapping myself in my cloak to protect my skin from the dawn’s light (the sun’s rays felt like hundreds of tiny needles on my flesh), I departed the room. Closing the French doors behind me, I waited on the roof for her to appear. I planned to spy on her until she exposed herself as the typical mortal that I knew she must be.
A few moments later, she walked out through the same doors I had just used, dressed only in a cream translucent nightgown. Her ankles were bare and slight, and I could just see the outline of her slim legs beneath her nightdress as the sunlight began to touch her skin. She walked purposely to a small stone bench under a tree that had not yet awoken this year and most likely never would. Just as quickly as she had come, she stood and began to walk back toward her room. I was feeling playful. What did it really matter if I revealed myself? I jumped down without a sound and sat on the bench that she had just occupied. Even though she had only been here but a moment, I could still feel her warmth lingering on the surface. Somehow, she sensed I was there, and she began to run, which was not surprising. I was sure fear motivated her movement. There was no need to pursue. I could catch her easily. But then she did something that put all my old questions to rest and created new ones. She jumped up and grabbed the edge of the roof. Using it as leverage, she flipped her body up into the arch, doing more moves than a gymnast at the Olympics, and landed, facing me, on the roof.
